8. Reginald Charles Smith

Reginald Charles Smith and Mary Elizabeth Canham

By their marriage in 1921 Mary Elizabeth had become Marie Elizabeth. They were married on 24th July in the parish church of St Paul, Herne Hill (cert no. 269.)
He was 20, a bachelor, jewellers assistant living at 60 Milkwood Road. His father was recorded as Charles Albert Smith, a foreman. She was also 20 and living two doors from him at 64 Milkwood Road. She was a spinster who was a cashier and bookeeper. Her father was recorded as James John Canham. The fathers were the witnesses at the ceremony.
It is intertesting to note that her occupation as cashier/ bookkeeper would probably not have been have been open to a woman before the 1914-18 war.

A first child, Ronald Charles was born on 8th November. Two other children, Eileen and Jack were born later. At some stage the family moved to Scotland where Reginald eventually became buyer for the well known department store, Patrick Thomson on the bridges in Edinburgh.

He died in 1972, the record being: (dist. 730 no. 540) 1972 July 10th at 44 Boswall Parkway, Edinburgh.

10. Walter Greenshields

Walter worked in the Kingsmeadows House estate near White Cottage where they stayed. His son Robert was head gardener at the Hirsel, Coldstream. This was the Estate of the Douglas-Home family (Sir Alex Douglas-Home was Prime Minister Oct 1964-Oct 1965. He had relinquished the title of 14th Earl of Home to take the post of PM and in 1947 was given the a life peerage with the title Lord Home of the Hirsel.)
Another of Walter's sons, William Greenshields was a plumber to trade as well as a retained fireman and a very keen gardener. He won many prizes at the Ayr flower show and possibly others.

14. Malcolm Kerr
