After the birth of their son Charles Albert nothing more can be found about this couple. They cannot be found in the 1981 or 1991 censuses for all of UK (except Ireland where the census records were sent for pulp during the 1914-1918 war), the 1890 US census or the 1981 Canadian census.

The following extract from ‘Rockdale: The Growth of an American Village in the Early Industrial Revolution by Anthony F.C. Wallace’. (New edition 2005, page 212.) gives some indication of what John William Smith must have done as a modeller and machinist.

The machinist’s practice in the early nineteenth century merged imperceptibly into that of the blacksmith, the ironmaster, the machine maker the engineer, the draughtsman, the inventor, the natural scientist. Established and successful manufacturers and merchants - men of good family - were quite willing to commit their sons as apprentices in machine shops. The trade was an old one and had a sense of community, which encouraged the transmission of technological information by methods of demonstration and practice as well as by the immigration of experienced operatives and the travel of American machinists abroad.
Although some successful mechanicians were manufacturers, the culture of the machinist was fundamentally different from that of the manufacturer: the machinist thought with his hands and eyes, and when he wished to learn or communicate he made a drawing or a model, the manufacturer and manager thought with his larynx, as it were and when he wished to learn or communicate, he did so in words, in conversation or writing. The machinist had dirty hands with working with tools; the manager had cramped hands with writing.

http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=view_booth_and_barth&m.l=1&m.d.l=0&m.p.x=9281&m.p.y=9172&m.p.w=500&m.p.h=309&m.p.l=0&m.p.p.l=0&m.t.w=128&m.t.h=80&b.p.x=15901&b.p.y=13244&b.p.w=500&b.p.h=309&b.p.l=1&m.v.x=107&m.v.y=57

The family have not been found in the 1901 census but in the 1911 census at 9 Lorrimore Road Walworth Southwark. Sub-district: Newington South. Dist. 6. Parish St.Mary Newington we have:
Samuel Valli, head, married, 30, butcher, London, Lambeth

Frances Alice Valli, daughter, 2, London, Wealworth
Edith May Valli, daughter, 4months, London, Lambeth
Joseph Hannahan Valli, father, 66, London, Lambeth.
So Joseph senior is living with his son Samuel and his family. Presumably Eliza has died in the intervening twenty years.

In the 1871 census at 5½ Marian Place, Bethnal Green there is what appears to be Eliza with her first husband, who must have died between 1872 and 1876.
Thomas Evans, head, married, 28, copper plate painter, Msex Bethnal Green
Eliza Evans, wife, married, 28, Msex, Islington

36. John William Canham

John William Canham Elizabeth Helsdon Fuller

Marriage: October 27th 1866. Both were “of full age” (He was 26 and she 23). He is a bachelor and she a spinster.
Both were living in Coleby, Banningham, Norfolk. His father is recorded as Francis Canham, labourer
and her father as John Fuller, labourer.
They were married in the presence of Thomas Hall, Mary Fuller, Charles Whymer and Hannah Fuller.

In the 1871 census at 24 Elizabeth Street there is;

John Canham, head, married, 31, plate layer on railways, Norfolk, Banningham
Elizabeth Canham, wife, married, 28, Norfolk, Colby
William Griddlestone Canham, son, 11, scholar, Norfolk, Colby

In the same house but a different household is:
Francis Crook, head, widow, 71, infant school mistress, Nottingham, Old Lenton.
(This information has been kept in case she is related to the Canhams.)

The birth of James John Canham is recorded in the indexes at Jan-Mar 1873 Lambeth 1d 538. He was baptised at St. Jude, East Brixton, Surrey on March 19th. The parents were recorded then as John William and Elizabeth Helsdon (the maiden name was not given.) He was a signalman.

By 1881 at 13 Hinton Road, the family is:

Panning up on the map shows a Loughborough Junction which would probably have been John’s workplace.

38. William James Slous

William James Slous married Mary Ann Tite on 9 July 1865 at St. Mary at Lambeth. Both were described as ‘of full age’(He was actually 30 and she 27 ), He a bachelor and she a spinster. His occupation is given as pawnbroker and both were living at High Street, Lambeth. His father was given as William Slous, architect, (deceased) and her father Thomas Tite, government pensioner.

As research continued, the information about William’s father was found to be wrong as his father proved to be James Baumer Selous, a civil engineer. The reason for this error is probably that William’s father had died on 5th September 1836, before William was born and his mother remarried and brought him up under his step father’s name which was Salmon.
The record of a first child to William & Mary Ann is in the Parish of St. Mary, Lambeth, Surrey on 20 May 1866 it reads “Charles Guideon son of William Slous, High Street, pawnbroker and Mary Ann”. This child died before September the same year (1866, Bethnal Green, 1c, 235). (William may not have known much about his father but he obviously knew about his grandfather who was Charles Guideon Slous, a well known artist.)
A daughter, Mary Ann was born at 104 Pownall Road, Shoreditch on 27 April 1868 No. 48 Child: Mary Ann, girl, father William James Slous, pawnbroker, mother Mary Ann Slous, formerly Tite. Informant: Mary Ann Slous mother, 104 Pownall Road Haggerstone.
(When this child married she gave her father’s occupation as “assistant to pawnbroker”).
Then William James Slous was born Apr-June 1867 Bethnal Green 1c page 261
Despite repeated attempts the family has not been found in the 1871 census.
After 1871 there are other births:Frederick Slous Apr-Jun 1871 Pancras 1b 181 Sophia Eliza Slous Apr-Jun 1873 Pancras 1b 182 . These have not been purchased.
Father William James Slous died aged 42 between Jan-Mar 1877 London City 1c 23.

After this the family were in great difficulty. Both William and Frederick were admitted to St Pancras Industrial School Leavensden, Watford on as paupers 13th June 1878.

William was discharged from Levensden on 30th March 1880.

In the 1881 census at 17 Raglan Street, London the records show:
Mary A Slows, head, wid, 42, monthly nurse, Lambeth, Surrey
William J Slows, son, ---, 14, M’sex Kentish Town.
Sophia Slows, daughter, ---, 7, M’sex Kentish Town.
(Monthly nurse, a nurse who serves for a month or some short time, especially one who attends women after childbirth.)

Location of Raglan Street. (Opens in new window.) http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=view_booth_and_barth&m.l=0&m.d.l=0&m.p.x=6465&m.p.y=3789&m.p.w=500&m.p.h=309&m.p.l=0&m.t.w=128&m.t.h=80&b.p.x=10540&b.p.y=2994&b.p.w=500&b.p.h=309&b.p.l=1&b.p.p.l=2&m.v.x=443&m.v.y=191>

Where is Mary Ann in 1881?
In 1881 at 9 Glebe Place London, Middlesex. In the home of Charles Smith Worssam we have: Mary Slough serv. Un 15 general servant, domestic. Battersea, Surrey.

Also in 1881 at St Pancras Industrial School Leavensden, Watford is: Frederick Slous 10 pauper inmate, scholar St. Pancras Middlesex.
Frederick was one of 580 inmates and 28 staff. Records for the school exist at London Metropolitan Archives but have not been consulted.
(<http://www.workhouses.org.uk/StPancras/> has a description of the school.)
Frederick was discharged from Levensden on 7 March 1885.

The family couldn’t be found together in the 1891 census but at 22/24 St. Ann’s Tce. St Marleybone, in the home of Thomas Ormandy there is:
Mary A Sloue, servant, single, 22, housemaid/domestic servant, born London St Pancras (The writing is difficult and could just as well be Slous. Remember also that the employer would have given the information to the enumerator and might not have troubled himself too much with accuracy.) Could this be the daughter of William and Mary Ann? Again, the family can’t be found in the 1901 census, possibly because the name Slous is uncommon and was often recorded with some other spelling as occurred in 1911 when, in Camberwell, there is:
William Selous, head, 44, single, house decorator, an employer in the jobbing builder industry, British, born Bethnal Green. Mary Ann Selous, mother, widow, British, born Lambeth.
A possible deaths is Mary Ann Slous (74) Oct-Dec 1911 Camberwell 1d 920. Buying the certificate would not throw much light on the family history.

Position of Camberwell. (Opens in new window.)
http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=view_booth_and_barth&m.l=3&m.d.l=1&m.p.x=9304&m.p.y=9821&m.p.w=500&m.p.h=309&m.p.l=2&m.p.p.l=3&m.t.w=128&m.t.h=80&b.p.x=15945&b.p.y=14480&b.p.w=500&b.p.h=309&b.p.l=3&m.v.x=138&m.v.y=111>

On 2 Feb 1922 a Frederick Slous of the right age left UK on the Remuera for Auckland NZ. Could this be ‘our’ Frederick?

40. Walter Greenshields

Walter Greenshields and Katherine Hunter were married in Sanquhar in 1840:
14th June 1840, Sanquhar, Dumfries.
This day Walter Greenshields and Katherine Hunter both this parish proclaimed for the first time in order to marriage.

A son, William Greenshields was born c1848. His birth has not been found in Scotlands people or anywhere else so it was probably never registered.

Walter, a brother to William, was born on 17 Apr 1858 at Kirkconnel. (1858, Sanquhar, Dumfries no. 10.) The information from the birth certificate is:

Catherine has reverted to her maiden name. This was not unusual in Scotland since, legally women retain their maiden names.

In the 1891 census (608, book 3 sch 25) at High Linn there are:
Catherine Hunter, head, 76, housekeeper, born Sanquhar Dumfries

No information has been found about Elizabeth Blackwood’s parents.

42. James Blackwood

James Blackwood Christina Herron

Christina Herron was born around 1828 possibly to John Heron/Herron (b c1798) and Mary Kirkhope (b c1798) who married on 31 Jan 1823 at Auchinleck, Ayrshire (Latter Day Saints information which hasn’t been substantiated.)

James and Christina were married possibly in 1850 in New Cumnock but that is not in accord with the age of the first child. (Latter Day Saints information which hasn’t been substantiated.)

The first accurate information about the couple is in the 1851 census (608 New Cumnock, ED3, p1. address: Monquhill).

Blackwood, James, head, married, 28, shepherd, Kirkconnel, Dumfries
Blackwood, Christina, wife, married, 22, Muirkirk, Ayrshire

Finally in 1863, the couple got their only son, James, after having six girls.

Blackwood, James, head, married, 48, shepherd, Kirkconnel, Dumfries
Blackwood, Christina, wife, married, 48,
Blackwood, Christina, daughter, 13,
Blackwood, Elizabeth, daughter, 11, New Cumnock
Blackwood, James, son, 8, scholar, New Cumnock
Monkithe, James, servant, 5, gen labourer, New Cumnock

In 1881 it looks as if the James Monkithe who was described as a five-year-old general labourer in 1871 is actually James Menteith, a grandson of James & Christina. (608 New Cumnock, ED 5, page 2.)

Blackwood, James, head, married, 58, shepherd, Kirkconnel, Dumfries
Blackwood, Christina, wife, married, 52, Muirkirk, Ayrshire

McLatchie, Isabella, wife, married, 23, Muirkirk, Ayrshire
McLatchie, William, son, 1, Dalmelington, Ayrshire
McLatchie, John, son,1 months, New Cumnock, Ayrshire

Within a couple of years after this, the family must have moved south as they are in the 1881 census at Iveston, Durham (4948/47 page 17). Two children have been born in England and then two in Scotland in the intervening years which implies that the family moved back and forward several times.

William McLatchie, head, married, male, 36, born Scotland, coal miner.

The cause of death was heart disease (three years).
It would be interesting to know who was paying for his care in Western Infirmary and how Isabella managed to be in Glasgow to report the death to the Registrar the next day.

There is some confusion in the 1891 census. Mary, who was born in Scotland and was one year old in the previous census ten years previously is now recorded as being born in England and nine years old. A son, Peter had been born some seven years before, apparently in England.

A son names Andrew was born in New Cumnock on 26 Aug 1864. This child presumably died young as another son, also named Andrew was born on 20 April 1866 in New Cumnock.

Grace Dalglish Pollock was born at Greenhead, New Cumnock, Ayr on 4th April 1870. Cert. No. 46. Father Robert Pollock agricultural labourer, mother Elizabeth Pollock M.S.Carpenter who were married 13th June 1862 at New Cumnock. Informant Robert Pollock.

Pollock, Marion D, daughter, 8, scholar, New Cumnock
Pollock, Robert, son, 5, New Cumnock
Pollock, Alexander, son, 3, New Cumnock
Pollock, John, son, 8 months, New Cumnock
As there does not seem to be a place called Lauder in Ayrshire Robert’s birthplace should probably have been recorded as Loudon, which is near Galston and Newmilns in Ayrshire.

In 1891 (608, book 8, sch 69) Robert(53) Grace(21) and Alex(13) are the only ones at Craigbank New Cumnock. Grace is a domestic servant.

Ten years later (608, book 7 sch 187) the address is Bank Glen. Robert (63) is a coal trimmer and Alexander (23) is a coal miner.

Going back before Robert & Elizabeth’s marriage to 1861 we find Elizabeth Carpenter (19) born Sanquhar at Lanes Muir, New Cumnock. She is a domestic servant, living on her own. (608, book 3 sch 60). Ten years before that (1851) in Sanquhar, there is an Elizabeth Carpenter, born Sanquhar, age 8 living with an aunt, Mary Brown and cousins Grace (16) born Sanquhar, an embroiderer of maslin (sic) and Alexander (20) born Grandford, Lanarkshire, an agro. lab.(848, book 2, page 25 sch 152).

A possible entry for Robert in 1861 is a Robert (23), born Loudon, Ayrshire, a ploughman living at Redding, Ayrshire (just north of Galston). He is a servant with a family called Young. (597, book 26, sch 6).

In 1851 there is Robert Pollock, age 14, born in the parish of Loudon and town of Newmilns, Ayrshire. He is with his father Andrew, three brothers, three step-sisters and his fathers wife, Helen. The full detail of this census is: 603, Loudon, Newmilns, Ayrshire, Main Street

The marriage between James & Marion is recorded in two Parishes:

Marriages Innerwick, 1852.3
Innerwick , 6th January, 1853
James Henderson & Marion Cousin
Booked names in order to marriage, James Henderson in this Parish, and Marion Cousin, in the Parish of Alloa, John Henderson, for thr bridegroom, and George Paxton for the Bride, -cautioners-proclaimed, according to order, and married, on the 11th day of January, 1853

Although the date of the marriage is different in the two entries, it is likely that the Alloa one, where the marriage actually took place, is the correct one.
